What is a pyeong?
A pyeong (평) is an old Korean unit of floor area: a square 6 ja on each side, where 1 ja is 10/33 m. People in Korea still talk about homes, shops and offices in pyeong, even though listings and contracts use square meters.
m² = pyeong × 400 ÷ 121 ≈ pyeong × 3.3058
Exclusive area vs supply area
Korean apartment listings show more than one area. The "pyeong type" people say out loud is the supply area in pyeong, which includes shared hallways and stairs. Balconies are not counted in either.
| Area | What it is | 84 m² unit |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive (전용면적) | Only your unit | 84.00 m² |
| Shared residential (주거공용면적) | Stairs, hallways | 28.00 m² |
| Supply (공급면적) | Exclusive + shared | 112.00 m² |
The legal unit is the square meter
Under the Measures Act (계량에 관한 법률) Articles 4 and 6, the legal unit of area in Korea is the square meter, and the pyeong is not a legal unit. Use pyeong as a rough guide and compare homes in m².
